About Me

Welcome to my new on-line fine art store!

I love painting, drawing, and experimenting with materials — watercolors, gouache, ink and pencil, woodcut printmaking, and more! I believe that making art is an adventure, and there is always something new to try and explore. I am excited to share my recent work with you and hope to keep adding to my shop regularly. Please bookmark my page, check back again, and follow me on Instagram at dawnwheat2020.

ARTIST TRIVIA

When did you start painting?
Painting has always been an important part of my life because my mother was an illustrator for Hallmark Cards and a Wildlife painter. Art was important to my family, and I was emersed in it. Later I studied fine art at the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a BA in Art.

Favorite brands of art supplies?
I am very particular about the supplies I use, especially when it comes to pens! I love the Arteza brand of gouache paintings and watercolor pens and usually use Strathmore paper or Artisan artboards.

How do I paint?
I have a studio in my home, and I paint and draw whenever I can around other projects. As a graphic designer and writer, I am used to juggling different projects and making time to make art around other things (ignoring the laundry, for example!) Also, I have the cutest little studio partner, my rat terrier, Wilson:

What inspires me?
I am always looking at the work of other artists, but I am most affected by the friends I have had for many years. I know many artists who are always making something, and it makes me want to keep going. That is how I started doing the Inktober drawing challenges!

What subjects do I like to paint?
I am drawn to nature, trees, and landscapes usually. My father was a horticulturist, and I grew up on a tree nursery/farm in Iowa, so these are the subjects that mean the most to me. I've also lived in Illinois, New Mexico, and Colorado — locations mean a lot to me, and most of my work is based on photographs I have taken myself.
